This morning (1st April 2011) I found a first-winter (2nd calender year) Iceland gull Larus glaucoides (Norwegian = grønlandsmåke) at Midtsandan (Malvik, Sør-Trøndelag). This arctic species turns up in variable numbers in Norway each winter. The bird at Midtsandan proved to be very photogenic, allowing reasonably good photos to be taken. The bird's English name is misleading by the way - as the species doesn't breed in Iceland but in Greenland (the Norwegian name means Greenland Gull). Confused?
