Parrot Crossbills in the hedge

I was sitting in the kitchen early this morning with a cup of tea, looking out of the window, when suddenly a bird appeared on the top of one of the ornamental pine trees lining the garden. It was a touch of deja vĂș, as this was none other than a Parrot Crossbill Loxia pytopsittacus (N=furukorsnebb). Not an everyday garden bird, but a species that frequented the very same hedge during winter 2017-18. But there was not just one, there were in fact five different birds around today (one adult male, 1 second calendar-year male, three females). Certainly a nice start to any Saturday morning, and there was still one female around at dusk.
