Summer holiday birding part 3: The Farne Islands, NE England

The Farne Islands lie off the Northumberland coast of NE England, a short boat ride from the town of Seahouses. The area is protected as a nature reserve, with strict access restrictions. It is possible to get up close to the wildlife both from the boat as well as from well-defined paths on land.

European Shag Phalacrocorax aristotelis (N=toppskarv).

Black-legged Kittiwake Rissa tridactyla (N=krykkje).

Adult Arctic Tern Sterna paradisaea (N=rødnebbterne) feeding sandeels to young.

Atlantic Puffin Fratercula arctica (N=lunde).

Common Guillemot Uria aalge (N=lomvi), with Black-legged Kittiwakes and Atlantic Puffin.

Razorbill Alca torda (N=alke).



Grey seals Halichoeris gryphus (N=havert).
