Summer holiday birding part 1: Kinderdijk, The Netherlands

We drove from mid-Norway to south-west Scotland this summer. Visited many exciting places, and it is difficult to pick out the best spots. However, it is a little easier to pick the best photos. One place we visited was Kinderdijk in the Netherlands. Not far from Rotterdam, the area is best known for it's collection of windmills. The wetland area there is also superb, and rich in birdlife.

Purple Heron Ardea purpurea (N=purpurhegre). According to a local around 240 pairs breed here.

Eurasian Spoonbill Platalea leucorodia (N=skjestork) coming in for landing.

Common Coot Fulica atra (N=sothøne). Adult above, juvenile below.

Common Kestrel Falco tinninculus (N=tårnfalk), in a nestbox at the edge of a marsh.
