Parrot Crossbills in the garden
During the past ten days or so a pair of Parrot Crossbills Loxia pytopsittacus (N=furukorsnebb) have been feeding on cones in the pine hedge at the edge of the garden. Most of the time we only get fleeting glimpses of them as they appear at the edge of the hedge before disappearing into the thick area in the middle to eat in peace. Today, however, they were much more visible, spending a bit of time on the tree tops and the edge of the hedge.
Also feeding on the pine cones is a male Great Spotted Woodpecker Dendrocopos major (N=flaggspett). But every time he appears he chases the crossbills off!
