Pine grosbeaks - again!
I couldn't resist the temptation to check Vikhammer this morning to see if there were any Pine Grosbeaks Pinicola enucleator (N=konglebit) around the school. There were 8 birds - 1 male and 7 female-coloured (note that females and juveniles can be tricky to separate in the field). They were feeding on berries (the trees are almost devoid of any berries, but there are plenty of half-rotten berries lying on the ground). Two birds (a male and a female-coloured) proved to be particularly confiding, and I lay on the ground looking at them at eye-level, they were as close as two metres away. I got really wet (partially melting ice on the ground) and I raised a few eyebrows from passers by (note to one's self: one is likely to attract a bit of attention when lying on a freezing cold lawn, right beside a busy bus stop). It was all worthwhile :-)
