This year has been a good one for breeding birds on the small island of Flatholmskjæret, which lies off the village of Muruvik in Malvik municipality. I have visited the site several times during the past couple of weeks in an attempt to count how many pairs of gulls and terns might have nested there. The site is difficult to count as there are lots of tall herbs and some bushes and small trees, and many of the gull nests and their offspring are well hidden in the vegetation. The site is also good for photography (viewed from the mainland, thus avoiding any direct disturbance to birds during a vulnerable period).
Common Eider Somateria mollissima (N=ærfugl) - female with four young.
Grey Heron Ardea cinerea (N=gråhegre). This is a juvenile, the species nests nearby.
Common Gull Larus canus (N=fiskemåke).
Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus (N=hettemåke).
Common Tern Sterna hirundo (N=makrellterne).
