Grey geese

On Friday 30th September I checked the Levanger area for geese. There were large numbers of Greylag Geese Anser anser (N=grågås) and fewer Pink-footed Geese Anser brachyrhynchus (N=kortnebbgås). Numbers of Greylags in autumn have increased in the area in recent years. The Pinkfeet are a little late in arriving from their Arctic breeding grounds in Svalbard. I counted around 3,500 Greylag and 2,200 Pinkfeet around Alnesfjæra alone, and found big numbers of Greylags at several other sites within a 20 km radius.

Mixed flock of Greylag and Pink-footed Geese on fields and mudflats. Quite a challenge to count.
